A bit of family history

The children of John and Jane were: James Cowey, born 13 Mar. 1827, Robert Semple Cowey born 1 Feb. 1829, John Campbell Cowey born 16 Oct. 1833, Mark Cowey born 12 June 1836 and Mary Gray Cowey born 22 Dec. 1838. James Cowey married Ellen Kerr and settled in Lakeport. Their family members were: John (married Barbara Haynes), Margaret, William K., James, Elizabeth (married Henry Kirk), Mary Jane, and Robert.

Robert Semple Cowey married Isabella Christina Inglis. Their children were born in Hastings area. In 1866 ,Robert built a grist mill on Salt Creek just south of Norham. He later sold the mill and took his family to homestead in Manitoba. He eventually moved on to Carnduff, Saskatchewan. Their children were: John (married to Hulda Orr), Peter (married to Prudence Platt), Andrew Gray (married to Annie Gallagher), William Dixon, Robert Semple (married to Sarah McLaughan), and Isabella.

John Campbell Cowie married Amelia Bawden. Their family was Anna Thressa, Amelia Jane [Jennie] (married Ernest Tuck) and John Francis (married Florence Anderson). John and Amelia remained on one of the farms in Cramahe.

Mark Cowey never married. He lived with his parents on another farm just west of John’s farm.
Mary Gray Cowey married Robert Broomfield who operated a sawmill in Haldimand Township. Their four children were Jane Isabella (married William Drinkwalter), John Laing Broomfield (married Jessie Shaw), Mark Cowey Broomfield (married Edna McDonald) and Andrew Gray Broomfield (married Myrtle Gleason).

This is an account of the first three generations of the Cowey family in Canada. Research is continuing to find other ancestors in England and Scotland. Most of you will recognize some members of the third generation as your grandparents or great-grandparents. It will help you see where you are in the family tree. This reunion is planned to bring together the descendants of the four children and get to know our cousins. Many of us will meet for the first time ,and that is what makes it very exciting!

We are calling this a Cowey/Cowie Reunion because over the years the spelling was changed to Cowie by two of the brothers' families. We do not know for sure the reason for this, but spelling does not change our relationship.

" WE ARE FAMILY"

Come join us on July 20,2008.
